Background: Bladder malignancies are the nineth most common site of cancer in men, and the fiteenth in women in the world. The aim of this investigation was to determine some basic epidemiological characteristic of bladder cancer in the Region of Nis from 1986 to 1993. Methods: The descriptive method was used and rates were calculated per 100,000 inhabitants (according to 1991 census). Standardization was made by direct method and world population by Segi was used as a standard population. Results: From 1986 to 1993 in the Region of Nis there were 348 newly diagnosed bladder malignancy cases (269 men and 79 women). The average annual incidence rate was 6.96 (10.82 among men and 3.14 among women). During this time, the incidence showed a slight increase among men (Y=8.2+0.6X; r=0.37), and slight decrease among women (Y=3.4-0.1X;r=-0.12). The highest incidence rates were observed among individuals between 70 and 74 years of age. Bladder cancer is generally 3.4 times more frequent in male than in female population (10.82:3.14). The highest crude average annual incidence rates were registered in the following communes: Razanj (13.8), Doljevac (12.7), Aleksinac (9.2) and Nis (8.6). The average annual incidence is higher in urban areas, among men as well as among women. From 1986 to 1993 a total number of bladder cancer death was 189 (146 men and 43 women). The average annual mortality rate was 3.8 (5.9 among males and 1.7 among females). Male-to-female relationship among death was 3.4:1. In the observed period the mortality trend among men showed an increase (Y=4.0+0.4X; r=0.70), while the mortality trend among women was slightly decreasing (Y=2.2-0.1X; r=-0.32). With growing age, regardless of the sex, morality rates grow too. One-year survival was 76.3%, two-years survival 64.4%, three-years survival 57.3%, four-years 51.9% and five-years survival 42.4%. Conclusion: Region of Nis has moderate bladder cancer incidence and morality, and the other epidemiological characteristics are in correlation with the results from other western European countries. |
